Scriptural views on prosperity

Making a Difference

making a difference

God sent Jesus to preach good news to me, to heal my broken heart, to announce my freedom from the prison house of sin and death, and to pardon me. He sent Him to announce to me the year of His grace – a celebration of the destruction of my enemies – and to comfort me as I mourn, to care for my needs, to give me bouquets of roses instead of ashes, messages of joy instead of news of doom, to give me a praising heart instead of a languid spirit. He renamed me an Oak of Righteousness planted by Him to display His glory! (Based on Isaiah 61:1-3 MSG)

This affirmation tells me that God wants me to grow and flourish in all areas of my life; He wants me to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

You have probably heard of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. It’s not new. This is the hierarchy:-

Level 5 – Self-actualisation / fulfillment
Level 4 – Self-esteem & recognition
Level 3 – Belonging & love
Level 2 – Safety & security- self-preservation
Level 1 – Physiological – food & shelter, survival

Maslow puts self-centred needs at the bottom – the basic needs, but finishes off with self-actualisation at the top – orientation to service and connection with others. These needs are genuine. They are part of our humanity – the way God has made us. The higher needs in this hierarchy only come into focus when the lower needs are met. Once an individual has moved upwards to the next level, needs in the lower level will no longer be prioritised. If a lower set of needs is no longer being met, the individual will temporarily re-prioritise those needs by focusing attention on the unfulfilled needs, but will not permanently regress to the lower level. E.g. a man having an asthma attack focuses at that moment purely on the need for air, rather than the need for a sense of fulfillment in his life …

Coming to Terms with Life

I want to continue exploring what the Bible says about mastering your life. I believe in the Bible and I believe it has the power to change lives. I am putting my life forward. I want to change. Religion however is something else. It has caused more heartache and problems, including wars, than anything else that has existed in the world. I love the Bible but hate religion. I love and appreciate many things about the Bible and Christianity because the Bible is a book that makes sense. Christianity is a faith that can be tested. It is built on truth. It is built on evidence. It is built on prophecy. It is built on fact.

bible There are many life mastery programs out there. I am researching the Bible because I believe the other programs fall short on principles. I believe it is impossible to reach your full potential without a complete belief on the Bible and the God of the Bible. Everything around us testifies to a creator God. Any intelligent person has to acknowledge the presence of a Creator God. Look around you. Look at everything in our universe how orderly it is. Look at all the laws that govern every single aspect of our universe.

Look at the watch on your arm. The watch did not come by existence by itself. It came into existence by organised intelligence. Some form of intelligence, a human one. Suppose the watch has a hundred parts in it. Take the parts and disassemble them. Put the parts in a box. You can shake the box for a hundred billion years and the watch parts will never assemble themselves into a smooth working watch. That is correct. Now that is a simple watch with a hundred parts.

Consider now our entire universe. Think about how well the different parts of the universe work together, in perfect harmony. Look at all the laws that are fixed and govern everything. Look at yourself. The image of God. As God created you. Your own internal world. Your ability to love and be loved. Your ability to reproduce someone else just like yourself. That is not the result of random chance. It cannot be. There is all kinds of evidence that there is a Creator God and this God has an incredible plan for your life.

In fact can I know this God? Can this God make an overall difference in my life. Can God make a difference in my overall success and achievement in life? The answer is an absolute YES. I want to tap into this source of power that I have only had a glimpse of before. God’s power is limitless. There is no end to the power that can come into our lives when we connect to God, in a relationship with Him.

weightsuccess Most people go through life powerless. Completely powerless. Which is easier to be good or to be bad? The typical answer is BAD. Is it easier to be positive or negative to life? Always the typical answer is negative. Is it easier to do wrong or to do what is right? It is easier to do wrong. Is it easier to be a failure or a success? Easier to be a failure. Why is it easier to be bad, negative, to do wrong and to be a failure? Why? What is the cause? It boils down to a simple three letter word. SIN.

Sin is the single most detrimental thing there is in the world to destroy your life. Sin is the greatest enemy to your success and achievement in life. Sin is the most debilitating emotion that people feel on a daily basis. Sin brings on feelings like guilt and shame and anger and defeat. Sin destroys yourself worth. It destroys your relationships. It can be devastating to your finances. It will ruin your health. Sin is the underlying root cause of all our poverty and inability to live lives of success and power. This is an absolute Bible fact. Inside of everybody in our societies there is a desire for something better in our lives. Everybody wants more happiness. Everybody wants more money in their life. Everybody wants a better marriage and fulfilling relationships.

You are reading this because there is a desire in you to have a better life, to achieve more, to master things in your life. Everybody has that desire. Where does that desire come from? Who put that desire in you? How does it exist? What does the Bible tell us? God. God put that desire in you. It is my Creator who actually put that feeling in me. God has created every single one of us as human beings of unlimited potential. Unlimited greatness and unlimited power. Jesus says, “I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly”. And God knows that the single most damaging element in my life to keep me from achieving that success and that power is the thing called sin. The good news is that God knows how to get rid of sin and put in its place the unlimited power that will live in my life.

MIND-SET 2

In the last blog we started to explore the idea of renewing our minds. We learned that if we renew our minds, God will transform our lives. Here we look at God’s promises for our lives, to find some ‘mind steps’ we can take to move to where we want to be.

Our thought choices

Dock We determine, by our own thought choices, which way our life is going to go, drawing in what we constantly think about. By dwelling on the promises of God, you will develop a positive attitude of faith and be propelled towards greatness and the good things of God, just as iron filings are pulled across a desk by a magnet. Yes, if you will transform your mind, God will transform your life.

If a thought brings fear, worry, doubt or unbelief, if it makes you feel weak, inadequate or insecure, then it’s not from God and needs dismissing immediately.

… bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,… 2 Corinthians 10:5 NKJV

Instead say ‘I can do all things through Christ. I’m coming out of this. Like Joseph, whatever I put my hands to do shall prosper.’

…the LORD made all he did to prosper in his hand. Genesis 39:3 NKJV

Choose to dwell on what you have, not on what you don’t have. Dwell on the great future that God has in store for you rather than on all your problems, on thoughts of failure or loss, on all the people that have hurt you, or all the mistakes you’ve made. Your subconscious will respond to those positive thoughts and you’ll move towards a happy positive life. If you can see the invisible, God will do the impossible.

Speak affirmations
Lastly, here are some positive affirmations based on Scriptural promises. Say them out loud with emotion! Yes shout them out with conviction! That way you will hear them, and so will your subconscious. You will have started to renew your mind so that God can transform you into who He dreams you to be. God will perform His word.

I am ready to perform My word. Jeremiah 1:12 NKJV

i099aIt will not return to Him empty but will accomplish what He pleases, and will prosper in the thing for which He sent it.

So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth;
It shall not return to Me void,
But it shall accomplish what I please,
And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.
Isaiah 55:11 NKJV

  1. My mind is stayed on You Lord. Thank you that you keep me in perfect peace. I trust in You. From Isaiah 26:3

2. Because I live according to the Spirit, I set my mind on spiritual things. From Romans 8:5.

3. I am spiritually-minded, which is life and peace to me. From Romans 8:6

4. I am transformed by the renewing of my mind, that I may prove that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. From Romans 12:2

5. I bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. From 2 Corinthians 10:5

6. I am not deceived. My mind is not corrupted away from the simplicity that is in Christ. From 2 Corinthians 11:3

7. I am renewed in the spirit of my mind. From Ephesians 4:23

8. This mind that is in me was also in Christ. From Philippians 2:5

9. I set my mind on things above, not on things on the earth. From Colossians 3:2

10. Lord I am like Joseph. You make all that I do to prosper in my hand. From Genesis 39:3

11. Thank you Lord for putting Your law in my mind and writing it on my heart. From Jeremiah 31:33, Hebrews 8:10 and Hebrews 10:16

12. Things which are impossible with men are possible with God. From Luke 18:27

13. I have the mind of Christ. From 1 Corinthians 2:16

14. The peace of God guards my heart and mind, through Christ Jesus. From Philippians 4:7

15. God has already given me the spirit of power, the spirit of love and the spirit of a sound mind. From 2 Timothy 1:7

Powerful stuff! To God be the glory.

MIND-SET 1

I want to explore the relationship between our conscious and our subconscious mind, and the role of our self image and our emotions; how we can use this knowledge to purposefully align ourselves with God’s will for our lives. It’s a super-powerful mastermind alliance.

Joel Osteen’s book “Your Best Life Now” (Osteen 2005) has had a great impact on me and has inspired much of the following material. Reading Osteen and other Christian personal development authors has opened my eyes to the power of our choice of thoughts and words to change the course of our lives.

praying You have a great future

We consciously use only about 2% of our brain. The rest of our brain is our subconscious, which is neither positive nor negative, and has no moral stand. It simply responds to what our conscious mind is thinking about. If you are expecting defeat, failure, or mediocrity, your subconscious mind will line itself up with those thoughts and make sure that you lose, fail or sabotage every attempt to push above average. Scary but true. So contrary to the common view, it’s imperative that you ‘get your hopes up’.

Your self image resides in your subconscious. It works as a ‘governor’ that controls your actions and performance. When you exceed your expectations or go a little too far, your self image pulls you back in line. If you fall below the setting, your self image will pull you up. I strongly recommend that you ask God to help you develop your self image. Ask in faith and He will respond. As your self image improves you’ll be amazed at how your abilities excel.

So we move towards what we see in our minds – it’s a spiritual principle as well as a psychological fact. In short, I am transformed by the renewing of my mind.

…. be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2 NKJV

In this process God is limited only by our faith. It is essential to stay in an attitude of faith and expectancy, declaring God’s favour over your life. Be on the lookout for God’s goodness. When you are going through tough times, more than ever you must choose to be favour-minded. Start declaring God’s favour. Start expecting God’s favour.

When you really understand that you have this favour available to you, you’ll ask for things you haven’t previously asked for. You’ll view your adversities in a new way. You’ve got an edge. Remember that the things which are impossible with men are possible with God.

…. He said, “The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.” Luke 18:27 NKJV

Let that seed take root inside you. You don’t have to figure out how God is going to solve your problems. That’s His responsibility. Your job is to be a believer.

Poverty Mentality?

God created us in His image. He thought it was a good idea to give you that special feature you have, or that unusual personality trait! He sees you as His special masterpiece!

When we go through life with a poverty mentality, it is not glorifying to God. He has put incredible potentials, gifts and talents within us, ready for us to use as we start seeing ourselves as He sees us. We need to step out in faith and act on the dreams and the desires that HE has placed in our hearts.

God has blessed you with every spiritual blessing. In fact you have everything you need right now to fulfil your God-given destiny. And as His children prosper spiritually, physically and materially, their increase brings God pleasure.

You may remember the story of Mephibosheth. He was the grandson of King Saul, but his image of himself kept him from receiving the privileges that rightfully belonged to him. We are children of the King of kings! We need to think of ourselves as such. Even more than that, incredible though it sounds, we have the mind of Christ!

… we have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:16 NKJV

iStock_000004423416XSmall Somehow when we identify ourselves with Jesus and everything He has done for us, we develop the same mind as Him. If that sounds too amazing, just remind yourself of

Romans 12:2. God transforms us when we renew our minds.

Learn to be who God made you to be, not what others want you to be. Learn to please God and not necessarily those around you. Stay open-minded and willing to listen to advice. But after you’ve prayed about something, be bold and make a decision that is right for you. God has given you the grace to do what He’s called you to do. Remember that you have everything you need right now to fulfil your God-given destiny.

In the next blog, we’ll learn more about the practice of renewing your mind.
